SCHOOL OF LAW, KISUMU CAMPUS
Welcome to the Kisumu Campus of the University of Nairobi Faculty of Law, where students can expect to be stimulated and challenged by a rigorous academic programme, delivered by committed legal academics.
Our Campus started its academic programmes in November 2009. We are located at Kisumu Campus Complex along Oginga Odinga road, an environment which is conducive to learning, and offers an exciting community learning experience.
We have dedicated lecturers with knowledge and experience in diverse legal fields. The Faculty of Law-Kisumu Campus is headed by an Associate Dean, who is assisted by an examination officer and administrative and support staff. Currently, we have thirteen lecturers, an administrator and support staff in the secretarial, registry, information and communication technology (ICT) and library departments.
We offer students an opportunity to obtain a law degree from a centre committed to academic excellence. We currently run a full-time Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree programme, with classes held during the day, from Monday to Friday. We also have Master of Laws (LLM) programme with its classes running every evening from Monday to Friday.
Our Campus attracts students from across the country as well as neighbouring countries. Our student population has grown from the pioneer class of 30 to over 250. We take pride in offering to our students the best environment and opportunity for academic engagement. We run small classes with a most-competitive student-to-lecturer ratio. This gives the students a good opportunity to interact with and learn from fellow-students as well as faculty.
Our facilities include a state-of-the-art Moot Court room for practical engagement by students; a fully-stocked Library with current law books, e-collections and e-catalogue and search facilities; excellent ICT facilities for both students and faculty, including a computer lab, WiFi and interactive presentation equipment, and a University Clinic that caters for the medical needs of both students and staff, with attendant referral services.
We have a vibrant sporting community engaging in soccer, volley-ball and in-door games, among others. Our students are exposed to a variety of extra-curricular activities through campus-wide student organizations and societies. Our students interact with various state actors (including courts and the National Legal Education and Aid Programme (NALEAP)), and non-state actors, for example, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA)-Kenya, Plan International, and community organizations. In these interactions, our students volunteer, learn hands-on, and offer much-needed paralegal education and advice services.
Our Campus aspires to be a centre of academic excellence within western Kenya and the East African region, developing a niche in a range of traditional and emerging legal fields such as Human Rights for minority and marginalized groups, HIV/AIDS, Environmental Law, East African Community Law and Business Law.
We prepare students for success in careers in both public and private service. Our faculty is involved in individual and collaborative research and writing, contributing to continuous development of law for social change, and increasingly incorporating students in these endeavours.
