Dr. Scholastica Omondi, Associate Dean, School of Law, Kisumu Campus, recently made history when she successfully defended her second doctor of philosophy (PhD) thesis. The title of her thesis: Socio Cultural and Economic Determinants of Access to the Criminal Justice System by Victims of Spouse Abuse in Nairobi County, Kenya,” makes a case for spousal abuse to be declared a national concern.
The thesis also suggests the formulation of policy and institutional frameworks that promote family protection. The timing of the thesis then, could not have come at a more opportune time than now, in the wake of increasing cases of domestic violence exacerbated by the Covid 19 pandemic. We recognise the thesis as no mean feat, and an added reference point on the issue of spousal violence.
Omondi previously made history, in 2013, when she was the first woman awarded a PhD in law by the University of Nairobi, and the School has every confidence that the University Research and Policy Community, the School of Law, and also the nation will benefit from the knowledge, inspiration and leadership of Dr. Omondi.
The University Management and the Community congratulate Dr. Scholastica Omondi, on this well-deserved achievement. Kudos.
